What is a Virtual Assistant?
So, you’ve been drowning under the weight of your never-ending business to-do list and naturally, you confide in a trustworthy friend over chips and salsa.
Their advice?
“Just hire a VA!”
You probably nod your head in agreement, but inside you’re thinking, Okay… but what exactly is a virtual assistant, and how would one actually help me?
If that sounds familiar, you’ve stumbled onto the right blog post.
What a Virtual Assistant is NOT
First, let’s clear up a few things.
A virtual assistant is not automatically an employee. Many VAs work as independent service providers and run businesses of their own, although some companies do choose to hire virtual assistants as employees. For many small business owners, working with an independent VA can be a more flexible way to get support without adding a traditional employee to the team.
A VA is also not someone sitting at a desk waiting around for you to give them something to do, and they’re definitely not an unlimited, on-call resource for every task that pops into your head.
They’re not a mind reader either.
And hiring a VA doesn’t automatically mean you’re hiring a strategist, social media manager, or online business manager. Every VA has their own skills, specialties, boundaries, availability, and way of working.
That’s actually one of the best parts—you can find support that fits what your business needs.
So, What Is a VA?
A Virtual Assistant is a flexible business resource who works remotely to support specific areas of your business.
Depending on their experience and specialties, a VA might help with administrative work, e-commerce, email marketing, Pinterest, blog management, customer support, organization, or a combination of different tasks.
The goal isn’t necessarily to hand over your entire business.
It’s to take some of the things that have been piling up on your plate and give them to someone who can actually get them done.
VAs often bring knowledge, experience, and a fresh set of eyes that can help your business feel more organized and manageable.
Are they a genie in a bottle who can magically make every business problem disappear?
Unfortunately, no.
But having the right person handling things behind the scenes can feel a little like magic when your workload gets lighter, your business runs more smoothly, and you finally have time to focus on the work you actually enjoy.
